- Have one drawer or fireproof/waterproof attaché where you keep the papers you will want to evacuate - insurance policies, financial, medical, and pet papers, passports, photos etc. Consider keeping off site or electronic/off site copies of these as well as of computer backups, and recent photos of children and pets in case you are ever separated.
- Include in above attaché: video or photograph your home's contents, for insurance purposes.
- Create a list of Evacuation Valuables to take in an emergency - (Glasses, medications, papers, computer, each family member's treasures. Go through each room and make a checklist of what is most essential.)
- Get in the habit of filling you gas tank when it gets down to quarter or half full. Maintain good wiper blades and air in tires.
- Get a City of Malibu Dolphin Decal on your car - to help you to get home during a Stage 2 road closure
- Sign up cell phones on the city's website CONNECT-CTY (Reverse 911)
- Sign up for email notification at www.ci.malibu.ca.us, (text messages can be sent to your Blackberry too)
- Have adequate insurance policies. For info on the Nat'l Flood Ins Program 888-225-5356
- Keep emergency contact info in a known handy place, and programmed into phones
- Think about security, and a possible alternative storage location for some of your emergency food and supplies, in case of pillage.
- Have next to each bed: Shoes with thick soles where glass etc can't fall on them after an earthquake. Pocket flashlights with extra batteries
- Install smoke alarms
- Install an automatic seismic gas shut off valve
- Maintain a secure fence around your swimming pool or spa- keep the gate shut
- Remove any flammable material within 3 ft of water heater or furnace
- Secure your water heater and tall heavy furniture. Don't hang objects where they could fall on a bed in an earthquake.
- Obtain and post a "Rescue Alert Sticker" if you have pets, and have your animals implanted with micro-chip identification
- Make sure your address is clearly visible from the road
