Preparation & Prevention
  • Have one drawer or fireproof/waterproof attaché where you keep the papers you will want to evacuate - insurance policies, financial, medical, and pet papers, passports, photos etc.  Consider keeping off site or electronic/off site copies of these as well as of computer backups, and recent photos of children and pets in case you are ever separated.
  • Include in above attaché: video or photograph your home's contents, for insurance purposes.
  • Create a list of Evacuation Valuables to take in an emergency - (Glasses, medications, papers, computer, each family member's treasures.   Go through each room and make a checklist of what is most essential.)
  • Get in the habit of filling you gas tank when it gets down to quarter or half full.  Maintain good wiper blades and air in tires.
  • Get a City of Malibu Dolphin Decal on your car - to help you to get home during a Stage 2 road closure
  • Sign up cell phones on the city's website CONNECT-CTY (Reverse 911)
  • Sign up for email notification at www.ci.malibu.ca.us, (text messages can be sent to your Blackberry too)
  • Have adequate insurance policies.  For info on the Nat'l Flood Ins Program 888-225-5356
  • Keep emergency contact info in a known handy place, and programmed into phones
  • Think about security, and a possible alternative storage location for some of your emergency food and supplies, in case of pillage.
  • Have next to each bed:   Shoes with thick soles where glass etc can't fall on them after an earthquake.    Pocket flashlights with extra batteries
  • Install smoke alarms
  • Install an automatic seismic gas shut off valve
  • Maintain a secure fence around your swimming pool or spa- keep the gate shut
  • Remove any flammable material within 3 ft of water heater or furnace
  • Secure your water heater and tall heavy furniture.  Don't hang objects where they could fall on a bed in an earthquake.
  • Obtain and post a "Rescue Alert Sticker" if you have pets, and have your animals implanted with micro-chip identification
  • Make sure your address is clearly visible from the road
